Take the Shirt off My Back

cut shirt 8_edited-1

I have started a local project, based around the national “Shirts off Our Backs” campaign, which is a Facebook campaign encouraging people to send the shirts off their backs to 10 Downing Street, between 29th March and 1st April, as a way of telling Cameron that he has taken everything else from us, so now why not take the shirt off our backs.

Our local project will be led by three female textiles artists, Cathy Dunbar, Lulu Agate and me.  Working under the umbrella organisation of Rebel Arts, we will collaborate with local people to produce work on shirts that both supports the national protest, but also highlights the effects of the cuts locally.  This will involve gathering stories about how the cuts have impacted upon people and producing a range of work from this exercise, to illustrate the stories.  It is our hope that this might help to reinvigorate the local anti-cuts campaigns.

If you want to decorate a shirt, please do.  I have lots of shirts bought from charity shops, waiting for a good home.
